Change Your Smoke Detector Batteries As The Seasons Change
Are your smoke detectors in good working order? To ensure optimal protection, the batteries in all smoke detectors installed in the home must be checked and changed regularly. And while you’re at it, make sure that you have enough detectors installed in the right places throughout your home.
With the change of seasons, many homeowners take on the task of ensuring that their smoke detectors work, along with their heating systems. However, you can perform this task at any time of year. The key is regularity. If the batteries are dead, you and your family are simply not safe.
Follow these maintenance steps to obtain peace of mind:
- Changing batteries – If you haven’t checked or installed any of your smoke detectors in the past, first check to see if the devices are battery operated. Obviously, there’s no need to change the batteries in a hard-wired or plug-in detector. You may want to read the owner’s manual that came with the detectors, but changing the batteries is a fairly simple process. Simply open the cover on the device, carefully remove the batteries, and insert new, fresh ones.
- Assess your safety – The U.S Fire Administration recommends that homeowners have at least one detector installed near a sleeping area. If the bedrooms in your home are located far from each other, install a device in the hallway directly outside of the bedrooms. You should also install a detector on each floor of your home if you have a multi-story home. A second-floor detector may not sense a fire on the first floor in time to alert you. Consider installing a detector inside bedrooms, if you or family members sleep with the doors closed, which can prevent smoke from reaching the alarm.
