Don't Damage Your HVAC System During Your Home Remodel

Remodeling your home is an excellent way to increase its value or make your space more usable for your family. However, remodeling can be a messy process, and if you’re not careful, some of that dust and debris can get in your HVAC system and cause some serious problems. Use these tips to make sure your HVAC equipment doesn’t need any expensive repairs once you’re done with that costly remodeling job.

As much as possible, try to do all of the cutting, drilling and sawing work in your garage or in the yard away from the inside of your house.
Separate the construction area from the rest of the house with plastic cloths and heavy canvas blankets if the work can’t be done in a different location.
Close off registers where work is being done inside your home. This can keep small bits of dust and debris from being sucked inside your heating and cooling system and blocking airflow or eroding indoor air quality.
Try to avoid using your air conditioner or heater as much as possible when you’re in the middle of a remodeling project. If possible, schedule those remodeling projects for comfortable times of year in your area so you can open windows instead of running the forced-air heating or A/C.
Make sure the work area is cleaned up each day before the crew leaves. This is especially important if you’re working inside the house where something could easily get into your HVAC equipment. Cleanup is less important but still essential if you’re working outside or in the garage.
Always discuss the remodeling plans with your HVAC contractor before you start the project. They may be able to give you some extra advice to help keep your HVAC equipment and system from being damaged while you’re upgrading your house.
