Haven’t Winterized Your Palm Beach Home Yet? Here’s a Quick Checklist
The cooler weather of winter has arrived in Florida. If you’ve not taken the time to winterize your home yet, now is the time. It will save you money and keep your home comfortable until warmer weather arrives.
There are a variety of things you can do to make your home more efficient during the winter winter. The best part is that many of these winterizing tips can also keep heat at bay during the summer, lowering your energy bills year-round.
- Change your heat pump or furnace air filters regularly. Pick a date on the calendar once a month and take the time to check your filters. If they’re dirty, change them. If a filter becomes clogged, it reduces your system’s efficiency, increasing your energy bills.
- Inspect the ductwork in your home once or twice a year. Openings in your ducts can let warm (or cool) air escape into your attic or crawlspace. This means your heating system needs to work harder to keep your home warm.
- Check your home’s foundation and exterior walls for cracks. Openings from the outside can let cool air into the home you’re trying to keep comfortably warm. If you find any openings, use spray foam insulation or caulk to close up these openings.
- Inspect your doors and windows for cracks and openings. Air gaps around the frames can let in a large amount of air. You can use spray foam insulation to fill in these openings. Caulk works well for smaller cracks, while weatherstripping can prevent air infiltration around windows and doors.
- Change your ceiling fans to turn clockwise during the winter. This moves hot air down from the ceiling to where people are sitting.
